10 SEO Mistakes That Silently Tank Your Rankings

A website with good rankings can suddenly drop because of silent mistakes. Ten common causes and how to check for each one yourself.

Ranking drops are rarely because Google “hates” you. Most have a specific cause, and many come from changes you just made yourself.

1. Changing URLs without redirects

The most damaging mistake. Rebuilding a website and changing all the URLs wipes out every existing ranking. Always set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones.

2. Accidentally blocking search engines

Staging versions usually block Google to avoid getting indexed. Forgetting to unblock it when the site goes live happens more often than you’d think. Check your robots.txt file and noindex tags.

3. Duplicate content

The same content appearing at multiple URLs confuses Google about which page to rank. Common with e-commerce sites where filters generate countless URLs.

4. Speed that degrades over time

Websites accumulate plugins, images, and bloated code year after year. No one notices because it slows down gradually. Re-measure regularly.

5. Broken links

Pages get deleted, products get discontinued, external URLs change. Audit regularly and redirect any pages you remove.

6. Thin content

Dozens of pages with just a few lines of text drag down the site’s overall quality score. Merge them into fuller pages or remove them entirely.

7. No proper mobile version

Google evaluates the mobile version first. A site optimized only for desktop is limiting itself.

8. Low-quality backlinks

Buying links in bulk, or competitors pointing spammy links at you. Check your backlink profile regularly.

9. Expired security certificate

An expired HTTPS certificate triggers browser warnings, and visitors leave immediately. Turn on auto-renewal.

10. No new content

Competitors keep publishing while your site stays still. Rankings don’t maintain themselves.

How to check

Google Search Console is free and flags most of these issues. Check the Pages section to see which pages aren’t indexed and why.
