New Website or Upgrade the Old One?

An old, slow, outdated website is tempting to rebuild but hard to let go of. Five questions to help you decide, plus cost benchmarks to weigh.

This is a question nearly every business faces after three to five years. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but five questions can help you decide for yourself.

1. Is the platform still supported?

A website running on a platform that's stopped receiving updates is a real security risk, not a theoretical one. If the vendor has dropped support, an upgrade only buys you time.

2. Does the structure still make sense?

Three years ago you had three services; now you have twelve. If the menu has been patched together to the point where even you can't find the page you need, the problem is the structure, not the design.

3. How bad is the mobile version?

Sites built before 2018 were often just “shrunk down” for phones rather than designed for them. Fixing this is close to redoing the entire front end.

4. Can you keep your search rankings?

This is the strongest reason to upgrade rather than rebuild. If your site already ranks well, keeping the same URLs and valuable content matters a lot. A full rebuild that changes every URL can wipe out most of your organic traffic.

5. How much has patching already cost, relative to a rebuild?

A practical rule: if total patching costs exceed half the cost of a rebuild, rebuild. You'll get a modern foundation and won't be patching again a year later.

When to upgrade

The platform is still supported, the structure still makes sense, search rankings are solid, and only the design and speed feel dated. This is the scenario where upgrading gives you the best return per dollar spent.

When to rebuild

The platform is outdated, the mobile version is broken, the structure is a patchwork, and the site has little organic traffic to lose. In this case, rebuilding is cheaper in the long run.
