Landing Page vs. Website: When to Use Which

A landing page and a website serve different purposes. Understanding the difference keeps you from paying for a website when a single page will do.

Many businesses run ads that send visitors to their homepage, then wonder why they're spending money for so few orders. The cause is usually using the wrong type of page.

Website: many paths

A website presents the whole business: services, projects, news, careers, contact information. Visitors can head in whatever direction suits their needs. It's the brand's home online, serving new and returning visitors alike, whether they're just browsing or ready to buy.

Landing page: a single path

A landing page serves exactly one campaign and one action: leaving a phone number, signing up for a consultation, buying one specific product. No menu, no branching paths. Everything on the page pushes the reader toward a single button.

Why sending ads to the homepage underperforms

You pay to bring someone interested in product A to your website. The homepage then hands them twelve other options. Each option is a chance for them to wander off and leave. A landing page strips out all those extra choices.

When you need a landing page

  • Running Google or Facebook ads for one specific product or service
  • Launching a new product, running an event, or a time-limited promotion
  • Testing which message performs better before committing to a bigger investment

When you need a website

  • Needing a full presentation of your company, capabilities, and past projects
  • Wanting long-term organic traffic from search
  • Having multiple product lines that customers need to browse on their own

The reality: you need both

A website is the long-term foundation and a source of organic traffic. A landing page is a tool for each short-term campaign. Businesses that advertise regularly typically maintain one website and multiple landing pages, one per campaign.
